Everybody wants to park their vehicle in shade, but nobody plants a tree

Tai Dora

I remember long time back I had written in this daily about the importance of road side plantation in our state. Keeping recent developmental projects in mind, I would like to discuss the same topic once more. It is important that the trees that we are losing every passing day must be compensated by one way or the other. Road side plantation is one of the least efforts we can do in this regard. Road side plantation has many advantages. In this scorching summer, it will be a great relief to both the pedestrian and the vehicle owners to walk/drive under pleasant shade of trees. Besides adding to the beauty of the township, it will also absorb the dusts generated by the ever increasing traffic. No doubt it will also be a boon for our beautiful friends like birds and butterflies too. And given the cool environment for driving, a lot of fuel will also be saved by not turning on the ACs!

It is great news that many developmental projects are coming up in our state. The projects which will have a major impact in every common Arunachalee’s life, irrespective of their socio-economical status, will be Trans Arunachal Highway, Railway line, Greenfield Airport and widening of capital road etc.Plantation all along these road/railway lines if taken up seriously will bring development and conservation under one single roof. But there are few practical problems like the overhead electric lines which may hinder roadside plantation. I know it will be asking for too much, but underground electric lines will solve this problem and the constant power cuts due to snapping of lines during extreme weather condition.

Now someone might ask what about the winter? Well, a deciduous tree is the answer. It will provide shade during summer and will shed its leaves during winter. However, it is important to give preference to local species found in nearby forest. Introduction of exotic species is slowly becoming outdated, as chances are more that these species won’t play a better ecological role than the local species.

Lastly, to quote one of my friends  Heymu Lohorung who have rightly said: “Everybody wants to park their vehicle in shade, but nobody plants a tree” (Writer is Range Forest Office with Govt of India)
